I really liked the story "Fiesta." Yunior, the protaganist in the story, was very loyal to his family...despite his father's terrible behavior. I think that this was one of the main themes to the story. The fact that he was still faithful to his father's behavior told a lot of Yunior's character and values.
Another thing I found interesting in the story was when Yunior threw up. His mom said the car made him sick, but I think there was more to it. He isn't quite used to the United States and new things can make people sick so I think this was a way of showing his assimilation in the United States. The way he spoke also showed his assimilation into the United States because he mixes between Spanish and English.

I agree with you about the car-sickness being more than just mere car-sickness. There certainly has to be more to it than that.
ReplyDeleteYou make some good points. I feel that being in a new environment for Yunior made him feel different ways and act/react differently. It also does say a lot about someone when they still respect someone they necessarily should not.
ReplyDeleteI was also thinking something similar to that about Yunior vomiting every time he smelled the aroma of the VW's interior. I was wondering about that though. I'd like to know if there's any indirect meaning to Yunior's inability to keep his stomach. Also, I thought that was a great use of the word assimilation.
ReplyDeleteWhat role do you think the father's cheating played in this story?
ReplyDeleteReally good catch on the throwing up representing assimilation part... Especially since it was mostly traditional Mexican food he was throwing up in an otherwise foreign make of car.
ReplyDeleteHey, I noticed that your most recent blog did not show up. I'm going to assume that this problem goes along the same lines as one of my recent blogs ending mid-sentence?
